Flying out of the traps since opening up the 2024/25 campaign, Sheffield Wednesday will travel to the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon when they meet Sunderland.
Starting with the hosts, eventually limped their way to a bottom-half finish last season, Sunderland are desperate to find some crucial stability this time around. Although the Black Cats might have opened proceedings last weekend with an impressive 2-0 victory away at Cardiff, Regis Le Bris saw his squad come crashing back down to earth earlier in the week. Watching their EFL Cup adventure come to an abrupt end as they slumped to a 2-0 loss at the hands of Preston, the former Lorient boss will be calling on an immediate response here. However, signing off their pre-season preparation with an action-packed 2-2 stalemate against French outfit Marseille, Sunderland have continued to show some extended issues at the Stadium of Light. In fact, Sunday’s hosts registered just two points from any of their final seven Championship appearances in front of their own supporters last season a rut that stemmed back to a 3-1 victory against Plymouth on February 10th.
As for the visitors, mounting what was a sensational great escape last season as they clung to their Championship status, Sheffield Wednesday appear to have carried on from where they left off back in May. Getting the 2024/25 campaign underway with a thumping performance last weekend as they stormed their way to a 4-0 romp against Plymouth, Danny Rohl’s side find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high. Extending on their EFL Cup adventure earlier in the week as they clinched an eye-catching 2-1 win away at Hull, the Owls appear to have only continued on from where they left off back in May. Signing off last season with a 2-0 victory when they travelled to the Stadium of Light, Wednesday will be desperately seeking a repeat display here. In fact, winning all of their final three Championship appearances last year by an aggregate score of 8-1, Rohl’s camp are riding a real wave of momentum.
